Crop Residue Removal and Soil Productivity with No-Till Corn, Sorghum, and Soybean

چکیده
Crop residues have been considered during the past decade as alternate energy sources to supplement dwindling fossil fuel sources and enhance energy independence in the United States. Agricultural scientists have demonstrated the importance of crop residues in reducing soil erosion, enhancing the soil physical environment for plant growth, and as a reserve for major crop nutrients. In eastern Nebraska, we evaluated the effects of various amounts of surface crop residues (aboveground dry matter remaining after harvest) on dryland production of no-till corn (Zca mays L.), sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench], and soybean [Glycine mar (L.) Merrill] over a l y r period. Where crop residues were completely removed after harvest, average grain and residue yields of corn and soybean were 22 and 24% lower, respectively, than where residues were not removed. Removal of 50% or addition of 50% (150%) surface crop residues had little or no effect on crop yields compared to no removal

Effect of tillage and residue management on productivity of soybean and physico-chemical properties of soil in soybean–wheat cropping system
A microplot experiment was conducted in soybean–wheat cropping system at New Delhi during 2010-11 and 2011-12 to study the effect of continuous or cyclic tillage, viz., conventional tillage (CT) and zero-tillage (ZT) and residue management of either soybean (SR) and/or wheat (WR) on yield performance and soil physico-chemical properties. The experiment was laid out in randomized block desi...

Effects of tillage and crop rotation on nematode densities in tropical corn (Zea mays cv. Pioneer X304C) were examined in a factorial experiment with two rotation crops and two tillage practices (no-till vs. conventional-till), conducted in each of three seasons (1990-1992) in north Florida. The rotation treatments consisted of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor cv. DeKalb BR64) or soybean (Glycine max) ...

In previous research, use of PRE soil residual herbicides was reduced 50% in no-till corn and soybean by banding herbicides over crop rows followed by mowing weeds growing between rows two times. The research goals were (1) to determine whether such between-row mowing systems adequately controlled weeds and prevented grain yield loss in other competitive field crops, such as no-till grain sorgh...
متن کاملResidual Effects of No-Till Crop Residues on Corn Yield and Nitrogen Uptake
The residual effects of crop residues on N availability and crop growth are largely unknown. A field experiment was conducted from 1986 through 1988 at Lincoln, NE, to determine the residual effects on no-till corn (Zea mays L.) production and N uptake of 0,50, 100, and 1509'0 of the amount of crop residues produced by the previous crop during the previous 5 yr. These effects were evaluated wit...
متن کاملCover crop root contributions to soil carbon in a no-till corn bioenergy cropping system
Crop residues are potential biofuel feedstocks, but residue removal may reduce soil carbon (C). The inclusion of a cover crop in a corn bioenergy system could provide additional biomass, mitigating the negative effects of residue removal by adding to stable soil C pools. In a no-till continuous corn bioenergy system in the northern US Corn Belt, we used CO2 pulse labeling to trace plant C from ...
